Symptoms:

  • fever

  • pharyngitis
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • maculopapular rash
  • conjunctivitis
  • expressionless face
  • bleeding from mucous membranes
  • myocarditis
  • pulmonary edema
  • tachypnea
  • hypertension
  • anuria
  • coma

Mortality/ morbidity: Onset of symptoms is sudden, and mortality rates are as high as 89% with some strains of the virus, and can cause death in ten days. Incubation periods are normally 3-8 days.


Once a person is infected, the virus can be spread through contact with their body fluids or contaminated needles and syringes.
